On November 17, 2019, "The Mirror Image of the Subject: Su Xinping''''''''''''''''s Printmaking Exhibition for Forty Years (1979-2019)" opened at the Shenzhen Chinese Printmaking Museum. The exhibition is hosted by Central Academy of Fine Arts and China Printmaking Museum, with Sheng Wei as the curator.
Su Xinping is often defined by the art world as a "contemporary artist”, whose creation spans many different mediaandcan hardly be divided by a certain typology or stylistics. What he focused on providing to the audience was not the thematic reproduction of realism or the formal study of modernism, but the spiritual creation rich in the times and individuals. Having been deeplyinfluenced by Su Xinping’s original professional “printmaking” from the beginning，his works and the ideas they create are not abstract at all.
This exhibition displays more than 180 woodcut, lithograph and etching works created by Su Xinping since 1979. It is by far the most systematic and comprehensive exhibition of the evolution of Su Xinping''''''''''''''''s printmaking language. The exhibition consists of five unit structures: “Stirring of Knowledge”, “Destiny of Absurdity”, “White HorseReceding”, “The LostFables”, “Paintings of Unknown”，breaking the way of displaying by category.According to the curator Sheng Wei, the influence of "printmaking" on Su Xinping is overall and profound, what is not only reflected in the aspects of Chinese printmaking tradition, modern new tradition, but also in the aspects of the creative acceptance of foreign printmakingand the contemporary cognitionof printmaking being conceptual object and ideological resource. And it has created anindividualized and experiential “contemporary art" based on “printmaking".
The exhibition will run until December 17, 2019.
